NC Bugs

One thing the South is famous for (or at least should be) is its insects...cockroaches as large as small cats, mosquitoes that can drain a man dry in 3 seconds, crickets as loud as F-16 taking off, and dragonflies just slightly smaller than a Boeing 747.

Speaking of dragonflies, I snapped this picture of a bug I have never seen. I think it's a dragonfly because it has 4 wings, but each wing looks like a single thin wire with a small black flag on the end it. I can't figure out how it can even fly (but it does). If anyone has any idea what it is I'd love to know.

Cool, huh.

Wow, that's quite the beauty. I've never seen anything like it. Those flags really are at the tip of filaments? Wow...

WOW Jason, your good. (or a raving geek). I looked up the pictures and they do have whole wings, they are just so transparent that even up close its hard to tell.

Thanks Jason (trivia geek)

Scott

p.s. did you just know or did you look it up somehow?

Hey, I saw one of those by the horse pasture Wednesday. It's the first one I've ever seen here. There's an article in Birds and Blooms this month about skimmers. It showed some pictures of some very nearly like that one, but not quite. Yes, we do have fireflies here. They show up towards the end of the summer.
